The Proper Shade On The Hair Color Chart

When you look at a hair color chart or wheel, you will see many different shades. If you are trying to figure out the prefect shade for you, it can sometimes be frustrating. For example, you may love the new shade that your friend is currently sporting, so you might decide to try the same coloring product. However, on you, it may not be so flattering. What looks great on her may seem out of place on you, and this can be from a number of factors. Here are some things to take into consideration, before you make any purchases.

Understanding the Basics

The first thing to know about coloring or dying products, lies within the science of colors. If you have red hair, it might be a completely different shade from someone else. However, it is red because it reflects all colors except red. Yet, it can still reflect many shades of red, and this can create some of the most lovely reddish shades.

It is very important to be careful when you combine colors. For example, you could be a blond, and desire to become a red head. Some shades of blond, blend well with red and may give you a strawberry blond appearance. However, many shades of blond are yellow, and mixing red and yellow produces orange. Also, lighting has a great deal to do with coloring. Your tresses may be a slightly different shade in sunlight, than indoors.

If you are a red head, adding additional colors or dyes is similar to painting on a red wall or canvas. Certain colors will blend in with red, but others will cover it up. This explains what some hairstyles have highlights of other colors, and others do not.

Working with Skin Tones

Another reason why one shade looks good on your friend, and not you, may be skin tone. You may notice that women with darker skin may not look good as a blond, and yet women with light skin may appear very natural. It may be easy to understand this with contrasting colors, but the same effects are there with all colors. Subtle shades may not be as apparent, but they are still noticeable. If you hold your hand up to a coloring chart, it can help you see the differences.

Eye colors can also have an effect on hairstyles. However, it is usually not as dramatic as skin tone. Usually, lighter shades like blue or gray eyes are best with lighter hairstyles, and brunettes and women with darker hair, may look best, if they have darker eyes.

Professional Advice

If you are unsure about the right coloring product to use, ask a professional stylist. Professionals have training and experience in these matters. The money that you spend can be an excellent investment in your appearance.

Conclusion

Perfect hair color does not always come by accident. A friend may look great as a brunette, but it might not be a good look for you. If you study a hair color chart, it may help you understand how some shades blend, while others cover up. This can help you decide what to do. If uncertain, consult a professional.

Question by Terrin Lovejoy: What hair color would look best with my skin tone and eye color (pictures included)?
    PLEASE HELP! (:
I don’t have any pictures of myself, so I’ll use celebrities as examples.
My skin color is like Lauren Conrad’s in this particular picture: http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.realitytea.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/lauren_conrad_thehills.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.realitytea.com/2009/04/08/lauren-conrad-filming-fake-scenes-for-the-hills/&usg=__dHrMTIN_fbrTpD5DNGMv2_K7gjg=&h=567&w=405&sz=37&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=mLIGx3m_OTHf-M:&tbnh=161&tbnw=115&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dlauren%2Bconrad%26hl%3Den%26biw%3D1436%26bih%3D671%26gbv%3D2%26tbs%3Disch:1&itbs=1&iact=rc&dur=375&ei=v_anTLujJYv0swO0qMmTDA&oei=v_anTLujJYv0swO0qMmTDA&esq=1&page=1&ndsp=26&ved=1t:429,r:7,s:0&tx=-476&ty=57

My eye color is a blue/green, more blue or green depending on my outfit/makeup/light ect and they stand out more than anything.
I also have dark brown eyebrows (it can still look nice with light hair, usually with highlights, from what I’ve heart.).

I would prefer my hair to be some shade of brown, but any other suggestions would be great.
Because I’m not completely sure what I want yet. So please help, and if you can attatch pictures that would be great!

    Thanks, Terrin.

What Hair Colors are In for 2011?

Getting some new and refreshed color for your hair is one way of keeping your look updated and fresh. For the hair color trends this 2011, hair stylists have indicated that strong haircuts along with bold hues take the cake.

    BLONDES

White blonde (just like Marilyn Manroe) has been one of the biggest trends during the New York Fashion week. Hair stylists have associated this bold shade with “sex appeal” and “daring.” Sporting this hair color with an edgy pixie cut or full-length wavy mane should keep you in style during the summer and the coming fall.

You can also explore other shades of blonde which are still more on the “natural side.” Vanilla and strawberry shades are very suitable for the summer look. Wearing these colors with braids or loose waves is a very girl-next-door, hip look. Consult with your hair salon before doing anything drastic. Make sure you pick a shade that suits your features and skin tone.

Also, hair stylists have been raving about wearing light shades of blonde with dark roots. It is recommended that if you do decide to go with this trend, make sure you go to a reputable hair salon that does this type of hair color styling. The key is DRAMA! The combination of white blonde hair with dark roots is dramatic in itself and there’s no way to go but up from this point. Sharply layered short hair or long hair is a good combo.

    BROWNS AND BRUNETTES

Brown and brunette hair colors are the easiest to wear and style, according to a survey among women. It suits any skin tone and is friendly to almost any classification of features. Caramel and dark brown hair colors are still in for 2011. The best way to wear it for this season is either sleek and straight; or big and wavy. Hair stylists have said that retro trends are back and so blunt bangs and big hair will be a common sight in fashion magazines and runways.

This color is ideal for women on-the-go and just wants minimum effort for maintenance. Any haircut can adapt to any shade. But if you want to style things up for special occasions, loose up-dos and minimal hair accessories should do the trick. On the other hand, sporting hats and beanies are the accessories for the casual chic chicks.

    BOLD REDS

Red hair color is big this year. Celebrities like Rihanna have been going bold with red and it’s going to catch on for the rest of the year. Hair salons carry numerous shades of red and choosing the right hue for your skin tone and facial features is important. Red-orange shades and hot reds are the ones you want to look for if your aim is to really stand out. However, if you want things to be more subtle, getting a few highlights could be up to your pace. However, a full head of a single bold color is the big trend for the year. A pale skin tone is perfect for this hair color.

    CLASSIC BLACK

Black hair color will remain a classic go-to for the hairstyle savvy girl. This color is timeless, but to make it more high-fashion, give yourself an edgy haircut such as blunt bangs with a very short bob. Sleek and straight is the way to go in terms of hairstyle. A structured haircut is the most suitable partner for a jet black hair this 2011.
